Standard Deviation 標準差公式:神秘的 n-1

根據我們的課本,計算 standard deviation 標準差的公式的分母應是 n,但統計學的課本中,往往是 (n−1)。到底兩者有什麼分別?

1) Unbiased Estimator 的嚴謹定義是

A point estimator ##\hat{\theta}## of a population parameter ##\theta## is said to be an unbiased estimator if ##E(\hat{\theta})=\theta##.

2) 根據 Wikipedia 的資料,在統計學中,估計 Population Standard Deviation 最常用的方法是 Sample Standard Deviation ,即是

$$s=\sqrt{\frac{1}{n-1}\sum_{i=1}^{n}(x_i-\bar{x})^2}$$

但適用於所有 Population Distribution 的 unbiased estimator 卻不存在,原文是

It is not possible to find an estimate of the standard deviation which is unbiased for all population distributions, as the bias depends on the particular distribution.Wikipedia

    unbiased estimator 的定義有錯。
    以 x_bar 為例,x_bar 為 mu 的 unbiased estimator 意指 x_bar 的 expected value 等於 mu,而非 x_bar 大於 mu 與 小於 mu 的概率均等。

    另外 sample standard deviation 並非 population standard deviation 的 unbiased estimator,但 sample variance 是 population variance 的 unbiased estimator。

      這影片並非嚴謹的學術討論。你說的全都在 M1 課本上,但當學生一頭霧水時,只可用較淺白的方式去說明。

        正因如此,有修 M1 的同學看過這影片後或會覺得無所適從。沒有修 M1 的同學則亦可能會信以為真。

        影片中 unbiased estimator 的定義與教科書中的定義並不等價,其背後的意義相去甚遠,絕不可取。不求嚴謹並不代表容許將定義任意扭曲。

        另外,沒有修 M1 的同學其實亦有學過 expected value。故在講解 unbiased estimator 時大可跟從教科書中的定義。
